Joe Granieri was the original owner and founder of Joe’s Wharf, a fishing camp, in 1916. Medina Lake saw many changes in its early days, from a fish hatchery near the dam, to the stocking of rainbow trout, and a toll road from Culebra Road to the lower end of the lake, which later became a Texas Highway Department project to evolve into the road it is today. Joe’s Wharf was operated by Joe Granieri and his family from 1916 until 1978. In 1979, Lackland AFB leased the facility as a military recreation area for troops and their families to enjoy picnics, camping, fishing, and boating at a reasonable cost, with easy access and a safe location. Many improvements were made under Lackland’s management, including the Meeco Marina, the bait house, grooming of the grounds, and the addition of RV sites. The military leased the property until 1994. From 1995 to 2000, the property was privately leased and called The Marina on Lake Medina. In 2001, one of Joe’s daughters and her family re-established the business as Joe's Place Marina and Resort, in honor of her father who passed away in 1980. She continued to run the marina until her passing in late 2020. In March of 2024, we purchased the property and are excited to restore it to its former glory! We are currently closed for renovations and improvements but hope to soon open Joe's Place Marina for everyone to enjoy the lake!
March 22, 2024, marked a significant change as Joe's Place Marina transitioned ownership, giving birth to the vision of Sunset Resort! Our roots at Medina Lake run deep, as we've been living and creating memories with our family since 2001. We are thrilled to take on the challenge of transforming Sunset Resort into a world-class facility that offers something for everyone. Please bear with us as this transition will take some time to complete, so be sure to check back often for updates.
Update #1 - We are excited to announce the opening of the boat launch for kayaks, paddle boards, and canoe launching. Unfortunately, due to low lake levels, we are unable to accommodate a motorized boat launch at this time, so keep praying for rain!
Update #2 - We are planning to open limited luxury RV sites at our Medina Lake Resort before summer 2025!
