Joe Granieri was the original owner and founder of Joe’s Wharf, a fishing camp, in 1916. Medina Lake saw many changes in the early days, from a fish hatchery near the dam, to stocking of rainbow trout, to a toll road from Culebra Road to the lower end of the lake, later becoming a Texas Highway Department project to become the road it is today. Joe’s Wharf was run by Joe Granieri and his family from 1916 until 1978. In 1979, Lackland AFB leased the facility as a military recreation area for troops and their families to enjoy picnics, camping, fishing and boating at a reasonable cost, easy access, and a safe location. Many improvements were made to the facility under Lackland’s management, including the Meeco Marina, the bait house, grooming of the grounds, and the addition of the RV area. The military leased the property until 1994. From 1995 to 2000, the property was privately leased and called The Marina on Lake Medina. In 2001, one of Joe’s daughters and her family re-established the business, calling it Joe’s Place Marina and Resort, in honor of her father who passed away in 1980. She continued to run the marina until her passing in late 2020. In March of 2024, we purchased the property and are excited to bring it back up to what it once was! We are currently closed for renovations and improvements but hope to soon open up for all to enjoy the lake!
March 22, 2024, The ownership of Joe's Place Marina changed hands and the vison of Sunset Resort is born! Our roots have run deep at Medina Lake since 2001, living and making memories for our family. We are excited for the challenge of bringing Sunset Resort to a world class facility that offers something for everyone. The transition will take time to complete, so check back often for updates.
